Why visit the Sahara Desert?2024-03-22T14:44:07+00:00

In the Sahara desert you will live unique experiences, you will see unique landscapes, you will meet different people and cultures (although most of them with a common denominator are Berbers) as you can see everything will be unique, but also majestic, silent, immense.

In the Sahara desert, you will be able to hike ((at the foot of dromedary) and camp under the stars which you will be able to observe better because the sky is pure in the biggest desert of the world and you will continue walking through the majestic dunes or impressive rock formations, alone with yourself in silence, and even achieve a mental clarity that you might be needing.

You will see that the Sahara desert is a place unlike any other place on earth; on the contrary, you can sometimes believe that you have travelled to the moon in the case of the Algerian Sahara.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in his famous book “The Little Prince” said that “the desert is beautiful” and he was right, that’s why you have to visit the Sahara desert at least once in your life.

If you travel with us, “Visit the Sahara” will not treat you as a “tourist with money” and I promise you that we will not take you to a maximum of places to try to sell you “souvenirs”.

The native Berbers often use the word “gaouri” or “roumi” to call those we know as “tourists with many bucks”. It is interesting to know that the term “roumi” has its origins in the times of the intense presence of Rome (roumi/Romans) in this region of North Africa. Although this term “roumi” was later used to refer to the Byzantines.

If you travel with us, “Visit the Sahara” will organise an authentic stay in the Sahara desert for you to live a unique experience, beyond the incredible landscapes where we will take you, to get to know the local culture, history, music and food.

We’ll take good care of you, you’ll see, and we’ll tell you stories, being able to communicate all this information in the language of your choice, Spanish, French or English.

See you soon, inch’allah!

Why visit the Tunisian Sahara?2024-03-22T14:44:16+00:00

Travellers planning to travel to the genuine Sahara Desert are generally looking for an adventurous trip and a unique experience. However, the decisions of where to go, for how long, and with whom, are difficult to make, and that is why I have decided to try to help you, so that you have more up-to-date, practical and relevant information when organising your trip to the Sahara Desert.
I am going to give you 2 reasons why, in my opinion, it is worth choosing to travel to the Sahara Desert in Tunisia instead of Morocco.

1. Less tourists, less 4×4 and more authenticity if you travel to the Sahara Desert in Tunisia.

For the European audience, especially nowadays, the Sahara Desert in Morocco is better known and more developed for tourism than the Sahara Desert in Tunisia. However, this can also be a reason to choose the Sahara Desert in Tunisia, if you are looking to get away from the masses and want to visit quiet places where you want to meet nature and local people, and not compatriots from your own country or even city.

I guess you already know that when you arrive in Marrakech from your home city, you will still need to take almost 10 hours by 4X4 just to get to Merzouga, considered as the real gateway to the Sahara desert in Morocco. In the case of the Tunisian Sahara, you save yourself many hours of 4X4 in transit with the boredom and fatigue that this can entail.

2. In Tunisia you will find a greater variety of Sahara desert landscapes.

As I mention on this page of this website, only in the Sahara desert of Tunisia will you be lucky enough to experience the two main types of desert, one the erg, to the east, which is a desert that everyone imagines with large dunes of fine sand that can reach up to 250 metres high – the Great Erg Oriental – and the reg, then to the west, composed this time of mountainous rocks polished by the sand-laden wind, the “djebel Dahar”.

In short, we will show you the Sahara desert of Tunisia in magnificent “Dar” (in Morocco they say “Riad”) or typical troglodyte houses where you will spend the night, as well as the different shapes of the Sahara desert, sleeping under a traditional tent (jaima) under the stars of an incredibly clear sky to the rhythm of the music of our experienced guides without forgetting the wonderful and refreshing oasis, and finally some villages of Berber origin and all this in a very reduced space of time of only 8 days and 7 nights.

Why visit the Algerian Sahara ?2024-03-26T12:29:29+00:00

The park of Tassili N’Ajjer (“plateau of the rivers” in the Touareg language) and the Tadrart Rouge region (“red mountains” because of the colour of the rock formations and the sand) are situated at a high altitude (an average of over 1200 meters) and are real geological, artistic and cultural treasures of the Sahara desert in southeastern Algeria (near Niger and Libya) which offer breathtaking landscapes and a window into humanity’s distant past.

These regions of the Tassili N’Ajjer and Tadrart Rouge are remote and very difficult to access – and therefore very few people have yet been able to visit them- with some sublime and grandiose lunar landscapes (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982) and are considered to be the largest open-air museum of prehistoric art with over 15,000 paintings and engravings dating back more than 12,000 years!

VISIT THE SAHARA and its local partner offer you the possibility, from Djanet, to do hiking and trekking in an authentic way and always in the most natural way and in perfect respect and harmony with these spectacular landscapes and the Tuaregs these nomadic tribes of Berber origin, who are often dressed in blue and who are the true lords of the Sahara desert due to their history of resistance, their adaptation to the arid environment and their rich ancestral culture.

When to visit Tunisia?2024-01-23T10:02:24+00:00

It is always a good idea to try to travel, particularly to Tunisia, not to coincide with the possible masses of visitors (although there will always be far fewer in Tunisia than in Morocco) and therefore we advise you to avoid – if you can – the French school holiday periods (because they are the most numerous foreign tourists) if you want to travel to Tunisia.

We also advise you to take into account that Tunisia has an important domestic tourism from north to south. Therefore, we do not advise you to travel to Tunisia during the month of December, because of the holidays and local festivities in Tunisia.

We also advise against travelling to Tunisia during the month of Ramadan (because many things are closed and the country lives “at idle speed”) which, as you know, changes every year. We will give you the approximate dates for the beginning of Ramadan for the next 2 years (1 March 2025 and 18 February 2026).

Finally, here is a link to find out the temperatures you can expect to find in Tunisia. Going to Tunisia without being able to visit the Sahara desert because of the high summer temperatures is a real shame, therefore we advise you to avoid the summer months from June to September inclusive to go to Tunisia because of the heat – but also because of the higher prices.
