Discover “Chott El Djerid”, the largest salt lake in the Sahara desert.

The Chotts (inland salt lakes) and in particular the Djerid (in Arabic الجريد) has a saline surface of 7,000 km² (20 km wide at its narrowest part and reaching up to 250 km from end to end) and is also located in the Sahara desert of Tunisia.

The Chotts are another form of desert, and you will be lucky enough to visit the largest in the Sahara.

Chott el Djerid is at an altitude of between 10 and 25 meters above sea level and is dry because the very little water that does reach the lake evaporates quickly due to the extreme climate of the region, with an annual rainfall of only 100 mm and maximum temperatures of 50 °C. Millions of years ago it was connected to the Mediterranean Sea, but seismic movements of the tectonic plates isolated Chott el Djerid.

Visiting Chott el Djerid you will be able to appreciate the Fata Morgana, which is an optical illusion created by the alterations of the temperature and in which it seems that there really are lakes in front of your eyes, and you can enjoy this unique landscape and see how it changes color in the sunlight.
