Trekking in the “ Great Eastern Erg ” of the Tunisian Sahara Desert
“VISIT THE SAHARA” describes below an example of one of the tours we can offer you, starting from the gateway to the Tunisian desert, which is the island of Djerba (it is also possible to organize this type of excursion from the town of Tozeur).
An 8-day adventure including 5 days of excursion in the heart of the Great Eastern Erg, with an initiation to life in the desert between dunes and oasis accompanied by the stars.
DAY 1: Djerba (hotel)
Arrival at the airport, assistance, and transfer to the hotel in Djerba. Afternoon and evening free.
DAY 2: Djerba – Douz – Lehsay – Elbida (2 to 3 hours of hiking – Camping)
After 4 hours of 4X4 through the mountains and tracks of Matmata, you will meet your camel team at the oasis of Lehsay. You will have lunch with them and start the afternoon walk through the large palm grove. You will then cross the first dunes at the entrance to the heart of the Grand Erg, where you will begin to discover a dreamlike landscape.
DAY 3: Elbidha – Balbala – Bir Belgacem (4 to 5 hours of hiking – Camping)
First awakening in the heart of the great eastern erg. Surrounded by a few palm trees, you will explore the small palm grove of Balbala. After lunch, a walk will take you to Bir Belgacem, where you will settle down in the company of the Tuaregs, taking part in the unloading of the camels, which will then move away through the meagre pastures.
DAY 4: Bir Belgacem – Oum Henda – Elhmidia (4 to 5 hours of hiking – Camping)
You will gradually make your way into the depths of the Grand Erg to the rhythm of the camels, and progressively make your way through this landscape shaped by the wind, with its pure, rounded forms. Surrounded by a few palm trees, you will discover the small sandy village of Oum Henda, its mosque and its marabou buried under the sand. After lunch, you will continue your walk until you reach Elhmidia.
DAY 5: Elhmidia – Bir Belghar (4 to 5 hours walking tour – Camp)
After a 2-hour walk in the morning, you will discover the well-preserved sand rose quarry of Bir Elghar. This will be a good opportunity to brush up on your geological knowledge, and above all to dig in the sand in search of these precious roses. In the afternoon, your caravan will make its way through the increasingly impressive white sand dunes. After a beautiful day, you will enjoy the sunset from the top of the highest dune.
DAY 6: Bir Elghar – Ain Mansour – Ben Chroud (4 to 5 walking tour – Camp)
You will see that in the desert, during the day, the sand takes on a yellowish hue, and the dunes turn pinkish orange at nightfall. You will notice that the dunes sometimes give way to a rich and varied flora. You will also notice the numerous animal tracks visible in the morning, which fade away in the wind…
DAY 7: Ben Chroud – Douz – Djerba (1 hour walking tour – hotel)
You will leave the dunes to discover another desert landscape. You will then be 10 kms away from Douz, where you will be transferred to visit the souks and then return to Djerba.
DAY 8: Djerba and transfer to the airport

Trekking in the Dahar region, Tunisia’s other kind of Sahara Desert
As of December 2021, Tunisia has inaugurated the Great Dahar Crossing, Tunisia’s first international hiking trail, with a total of 194km through this mountainous region on the edge of the Great Eastern Erg and near the island of Djerba.
Discovering the Dahar region on this hiking trail is an excellent way to explore some of the most breathtaking scenery and to get in touch with the most fascinating Berber cultures of southern Tunisia.
The Dahar region is incredible because it is full of curiosities: geological sites, fossils, traditional granaries, oil presses, wild flora…
From the Berber village of Tamezret to the Ksour of Ghomrassen, from the “Route of the Dinosaurs” to the troglodyte houses of Douiret, you can walk through the amazing landscapes of the Dahar, under the supervision of one of our experienced guides, who will not only lead you safely on your way, but will also give you interesting facts about the history and culture of the Dahar area.
The complete circuit consists of 12 stages that you will do, if it is your case, “a la carte”, or in its totality in case you have more time). You will stay where you feel like it, in traditional buildings, troglodyte dwellings, or in a tent under the stars of a sky that is usually extremely clear, and always in the good company of our guide and/or authentic guests who still live there.
